A Great Success Story : The One-horned Rhino Conservation

Biodiversity crisis has brought many disasters and extinction of different species, the one-horned rhino was also once close to extinction and by the beginning of the 20th century, less than 200  one-horned rhinos remained. The animals were a victim of bio-diversity and poaching as well

But there is some good news, the conservation effort of the greater one-horned rhino is one of the greatest conservation success stories of Asia. It is due to the strict protection and management from Nepalese & the Indian wildlife authorities, these creatures have been brought back from brink.

This week two countries of the Asian sub-continent are the news makers as the census of the one-horned rhino in India-Nepal revealed the rise of the population of these enormously beautiful animals to be 4,014.

Once the population of these animals were less than 100 and they were close to extinction. But the good news is that the one-horned population has increased by 274 since the last count,. It is also the result of the ‘baby boom’ during the pandemic when protected areas were less disturbed.
