A Nepali Sherpa scales Mt. Everest for the 30th time

A Nepali Sherpa guide reached the summit of Mount Everest for the 30th time on Wednesday, setting a new record, according to an official. This was his second ascent in just 10 days.

Climbers usually take several days to reach Everest’s summit, and it is uncommon for them to make multiple ascents in a short period.

Kami Rita Sherpa, 54, achieved this feat by ascending the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) peak via the traditional southeast ridge route, Nepali tourism official Khim Lal Gautam reported.

On May 23, 2023, Kami Rita Sherpa, 53, who had already climbed Mount Everest a record 28 times, was photographed at the summit during his 28th climb.

Kami Rita had previously climbed the peak for the 29th time on May 12.

“He broke his own record… this marks his 30th ascent to the top of the world,” Gautam, head of the expedition monitoring and facilitation office at the base camp, posted on the social media platform X.

Kami Rita first summited Everest in 1994 and has done so almost every year since, except for three years when the mountain was closed by authorities for various reasons.

Another Sherpa climber has summited Everest 27 times, which is the second-highest number of ascents after Kami Rita.

Mountain climbing is a crucial tourism activity and a significant source of revenue and employment in Nepal, which is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest peaks.
