NEA exported electricity worth 12.5 billion in the past 4 months
In the past four months, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has successfully exported electricity worth Rs 12.5 billion. This figure, according to the NEA, reflects an increase of Rs 4.63 billion compared to its exports to India during the corresponding period.
Since the previous fiscal year, Nepal has been actively selling surplus electricity to India, particularly during the monsoon season. The NEA reports that it has exported electricity worth Rs 14.5 billion to India since May.
To meet domestic demands first and foremost, the Nepal Electricity Authority has been channeling excess electricity to India. Around 110 MW of electricity has been sold to India through various channels, including the day-ahead market of the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) and under medium-term power agreements.
Nepal’s electricity exports to India are facilitated through the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). The CEA of India has granted authorization to Nepal for the real-time market sale of 44 MW of electricity, part of the initially approved 522 MW allocated for export to the competitive market.
As part of Nepal’s long-term plan, the country aims to export approximately 10,000 MW of electricity to India.
