Shambala becomes first Nepali feature film to reach Berlin International Film Festival

Min Bahadur Bham’s latest cinematic masterpiece, “Shambala,” has achieved the prestigious honor of being selected to compete in the highly acclaimed Berlin International Film Festival 2024. This marks Bham’s second foray into the international film festival circuit, building on the success of his debut film, “Kalo Pothi” (The Black Hen), which earned accolades and awards on the global stage.

Scheduled from February 15 to 25, the Berlin International Film Festival will showcase 20 exceptional films, including “Shambala,” in the competitive international films category.

Bham attributes the success of the film, which required eight years to complete, to the dedicated efforts of the film production unit. Originally titled “Chiso Barsha,” translating to the Year of Cold, the film underwent a transformation and was later named “Shambala.” The narrative unfolds in both Nepali and Tibetan languages, adding a unique cultural dimension to the storytelling.

This groundbreaking achievement marks the first instance of a Nepali feature film securing a coveted spot at the Berlin International Film Festival, underscoring the global recognition of Nepal’s burgeoning film industry.

The film’s captivating storyline revolves around an expectant mother from the highlands embarking on a journey with her husband’s younger brother in search of her estranged husband. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Dolpa, a district in Karnali, the film was shot at altitudes ranging from 4,200 to 6,000 meters. The script, a collaborative effort between Bham and Avinash Bikram Shah, weaves a compelling narrative that explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery.

Noteworthy actors such as Thinle Lhamo, Sonam Topdra, Tenzing Dalhal, and Karma Shakya deliver stellar performances, adding depth to the film’s rich tapestry.

Bham anticipates that “Shambala” will not only captivate audiences at the Berlin International Film Festival but also participate in other prestigious film festivals globally. However, the film’s release in Nepal is yet to be scheduled, heightening anticipation among eager audiences for its domestic debut. Stay tuned for more updates on this cinematic gem’s journey and its eventual unveiling on the global and local screens.
