Nepal retains ODI status after winning with UAE

Nepal secures its ODI status after a nail-biting victory against the United Arab Emirates in the final tri-series of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League-2 at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Nepal’s ODI status will remain valid for the next four years as the International Cricket Council (ICC) provides this status to teams that rank within the top five places under the League-2. With this win, Nepal climbed to the fourth position, surpassing the other three participating countries.
Out of the 36 total matches that each participating country has to play under the League, Nepal has played 34, garnering 36 points. Similarly, UAE has earned 31 points from 34 games, placing it in sixth place.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Nepal struggled at the beginning, losing three wickets for only 22 runs. However, Captain Rohit Kumar Paudel’s steady hand helped the team balance the match by scoring 77 runs off 112 deliveries, including nine boundaries. Paudel was named the player of the match. Aarif Shekh also contributed 43 runs off 52 balls, Gulsan Jha 37 off 31, Dipendra Singh Airee 34 off 19, and Bhim Sarki 29 off 37. UAE’s Aayan Afzal Khan, Zahoor Khan, Rohan Mustafa, and Zawar Farid took two wickets each, while Aryan Lakra and Junaid Siddique claimed one each.
Nepal’s bowling unit was instrumental in their victory, dismissing UAE for a meager 71 runs in 22.5 overs while chasing the 249-run target. UAE lost four wickets for only eight runs, and only three players managed to score in double digits. Aayan Afzal contributed the highest score of 29 runs, while Ashwanth Valthapa added 14 runs. Similarly, Karthik Meiyappan remained unbeaten on 11. Lalit Narayan Rajbamshi played a significant role in Nepal’s victory, bagging five wickets, conceding 20 runs off 47 balls, and delivering two maiden overs. Sandeep Lamichhane took two wickets, conceding 14 runs off 24 balls, while Sompal Kami, Airee, and Jha claimed one wicket each.
