55-year-old Sushila Upreti Tiwari Completes Mechi-Mahakali Motorcycle Journey
Sushila Upreti Tiwari, a 55-year-old woman, has successfully concluded her motorcycle journey from Mechi to Mahakali, Nepal’s easternmost and westernmost points respectively. Her primary objective was to promote and preserve the traditional Nepali attire, the gunyu choli.
Embarking on her journey on August 2023 (Bhadra 5 ) from Buddhasanti Rural Municipality in Mechi, Tiwari completed her five-day expedition on Sunday by reaching Gadadachauki, a border town in Kanchanpur district. Dressed in a gunyu choli, a traditional two-piece dress worn by Nepali women, Tiwari aimed to raise awareness about the diminishing practice of wearing this attire.
“Culture and identity are reflected in our clothing. If we lose our traditional attire, we lose a part of our identity,” Tiwari explained. “That’s why I chose to travel wearing a gunyu choli.”
A resident of Buddhasanti-3, Jhapa, Tiwari was warmly welcomed by Helen Shrestha, the president of the Kalika Lions Club in Mahendranagar, and a social worker.
